Visit Plaza Bolivar, the heart of the oldest district in Caracas, to pay tribute to one of South America's most iconic military and political leaders. The monument to the national hero, Simón Bolívar, was inaugurated in 1874, with statues of four women in the corners of the plaza representing the four original states of Gran Colombia: Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. The equestrian statue shows Bolivar in a proud, authoritative light. Many of the city's most important buildings stand close to the square.
