The origin of a literary genius, Shakespeare's Birthplace was opened as a museum in the 1940s. Adjoining the house is the Shakespeare Center, where collections, documents, and the library are housed. This is also where you buy tickets and enter Shakespeare's house. The creators of the museum exhibit have lovingly restored the house to resemble what it may have looked like during Shakespeare's childhood. Inside are furnishings, the glove-making shop of John Shakespeare, and household items that look as if they were just laid down. Look for a window full of signatures, the names of people who have visited the house over the centuries. The garden has also been restored to what may have been its original state, and it makes for a pleasant stroll. This is set right in the middle of town. Just the walk to it is interesting with a number of historical buildings. You get to his Birthplace from an entrance that takes you through a mini Shakespeare museum and an outside wall that has a summary of each of his plays. You are then led into his Birthplace house which is still setup to give an idea of how they lived on those days - even some of the original furniture still in place. Definitely worth a visit. You can also buy a ticket at the Shakespeare Centre which also includes Anne Hathaway's cottage.
We waited to be let in at our alloted time and I was very excited as I always enjoy looking around historical places. The exhibition at the start was really interesting. However, it all felt quite rushed. When we came out everyone was standing looking at the wall of play plaques and seemed unsure of what came next as it wasn't really clear. When we went into the house, we seemed very tightly packed all the way around. We had hardly any time to look at things and there was a guide in front of us who seemed to be taking just to the few people in front of us so we could almost hear. This was quite off putting and it would be better to have been given a self guided tour tablet you often get in historical places. In the parents bedroom the guide was really good and explained to us about the sleeping arrangements with Shakespeare's parents and siblings. She made it really interesting and informative. If the other rooms had been the same, the visit would have been great. There were a few things to read but we didn't have much time to read them because it was so busy. We are not sure we even saw all of the place because the signage upstairs is confusing with arrows pointing to the right as you get up the stairs. I think they aught to be timing the actual house visit (rather than from the visitor centre)and sending people slowly in bubbles. I'm afraid I ended up quite disappointed.
