Create an itinerary including Birmingham Back to Backs
Birmingham Back to Backs stands as the only surviving court of back-to-back houses in Birmingham. The style was popular in the city in the 19th century before most of the buildings were demolished through the 20th century. Today, take a guided tour through the courtyards and interiors of the preserved brick back-to-backs. Interiors feature furnishings from over a century ago and the sweet shop looks just like it did in the 1930s. Browse the shops for Birmingham-themed and nostalgia products and sit in on a workshop on how to make your own rag rug. You can only visit this site by guided tour, which you should book online beforehand. Put Birmingham Back to Backs at the forefront of your travel plans using our Birmingham trip itinerary maker.

  • As someone who was born in a back to back house in Saltley in 1960 I was really looking forward to this. It didn't disappoint. The grinding poverty was there for all to see.Ours wasn't a courtyard...

  • Wow we've been to Birmingham so many times and walked past these without knowing exactly what they are. If you want some very interesting history and a reason to stay out of the pubs for a couple of hours please go here. Tours have to be pre-booked and last approx 1 1/2. Hours. The houses are beautifully restored and protected and hearing about life in these times was really interesting. Our tour guide had lived in this type of house when younger so it was extra special to hear the family stories from someone who lived there. It's lovely to touch the antiques and go all through these houses. The amount of care and attention they put in is amazing.
  • Great place to see our past history. A real insight to working class Life in Birmingham. They have some new exhibitions coming in the next six months so well worth a visit then
