Mleiha Archaeological Centre
Meliha Archaeological Centre is a visitor centre and exhibition based around the history and archaeology of the areas surrounding the village of Mleiha in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates. Built around a preserved Umm Al Nar era tomb, the centre details the excavations and discoveries made over the past 40 years at Mleiha and surrounding areas (including Al Thuqeibah, Jebel Faya, Al Madam and Jebel Buhais), particularly the important Faya North East find, which provides evidence that 'anatomically modern humans' were in the Mleiha area between 130,000 and 120,000 years ago. These finds point to the spread of humanity from Africa across the Red Sea to the Persian Gulf region, and onward to populate the world through Iran, India, Europe and Asia.By using our Sharjah journey planning site, you can arrange your visit to Mleiha Archaeological Centre and other attractions in Sharjah.
The centre was opened on 24 January 2016 by the Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. The multi-phase eco-tourism development is intended in future to comprise accommodation, a campsite and an astronomical observatory, with a total investment of some UAE Dhs 250 million. It will also include the development of a 450 km desert park. The centre was developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).

It was an OK experience. The indoor knowledge space is quite small but good enough to learn about the ancient history. It’s a place for people who love history. There is a cafe on site that serves delicious foods. A bit pricey but worth it! There are also cleaned toilets and prayer rooms available. There are horse riding and buggy rides activities but there are separate charges for that. Bookings need to be made online or at the reception. We didn’t go for the rides but managed to visit the horse stable. Plenty of horses to see and to pat on. They are quite friendly. We were also informed that there are several other activities available but to be booked prior the visit. You can find more info on their website. It’s also a stroller friendly place for those who have younger kids.

There is a plethora of activities that can be done at the archaeological site. I would have loved for the museum to have a more interactive way to display the historical content. This could attract more people to learn about the archaeological sites of the region. The café looks chic with lovely view but rather pricey. Highly recommend visiting the venue around sunset to get a glimpse of its magic during daytime and during the night. Another recommendation would be to explore fossil rock or the wild caves nearby and then the museum after catching the sunset at one of these two destinations after an enjoyable hike.
