Xinbei, also known as New Taipei City, stands as a newly founded part of the wider Taipei metropolitan area, stretching up from the capital to the island's northern coast.
When in New Taipei, make a side trip to see National Palace Museum in Shilin, approximately Shilin away. And it doesn't end there: appreciate the extensive heritage of Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street), learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Taipei Zoo, wander the streets of Ximending, and take in the dramatic natural features at YehLiu Geopark.

Singapore, Singapore to New Taipei is an approximately 8-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry. Expect colder weather when traveling from Singapore in December: highs in New Taipei hover around 23°C, while lows dip to 18°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) to allow time to drive to Nantou.

Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Fri): relax in the rural setting at Sun Moon Lake Toushehuo Basin Recreation Farm and then explore the activities along Sun Moon Lake. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area and then relax in the rural setting at Cingjing Veterans Farm.

Getting from New Taipei to Nantou by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 22°C in January, and nighttime lows around 14°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sat) so you can drive to Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung — 3 nights

A small trading town in the 17th century, Kaohsiung now stands as a sprawling metropolis, its harbor representing the largest on the island.
Change things up with these side-trips from Kaohsiung: Chihkan Tower (Fort Provintia) (in West Central District), Hai Shan Pai le Di (in Anping) and Chimei Museum (in Rende). The adventure continues: view the masterpieces at The Pier-2 Art Centre, get outside with Ai He (Love River), examine the collection at Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, and stroll around Xiao Liu Qiu.
