Step off the beaten path and head to Omaha Beach and Musee Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie. Taking its name from a cluster of rocks off the English Channel coast, Calvados caters to your every holiday whim in its prestigious seaside resorts, but the department is most famous as the landing site of Allied troops on the beaches of the Bay of the Seine on the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. The department is one of the most-touristed destinations and biggest vacation hot spots in Normandy thanks to its seaside resorts with luxurious hotels and casinos, manor houses, castles, and quiet chalk cliffs all along the green countryside.
