Lake Myvatn travel guide

4.3
Geologic Formations · Waterfalls · Hot Springs
Considered by some to be the most unusual, beautiful, and interesting spots in northeast Iceland, the Myvatn lake boasts striking volcanic scenery and a rich array of fauna. This shallow body of water is well known among birdwatchers for the vast number of birds that visit here, particularly ducks. However, it is perhaps the flocks of midges that leave a more lasting impression on visitors. The dense population of these tiny flies actually gives the lake its name: Myvarn translates into "the lake of midges." Nevertheless, with a healthy dose of bug spray, visitors can still enjoy the wild, weird, and wonderful landscape for which Iceland is famous.
