Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Centro Historico de Cascais and Avenida da Liberdade will appeal to history buffs. Step off the beaten path and head to Chiado and Palácio Nacional da Ajuda. Step out of Lisbon with an excursion to Guincho Beach in Cascais--about 34 minutes away. There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Santo Antonio de Lisboa, wander the streets of Rua Augusta, and appreciate the extensive heritage of Miradouro de Santa Luzia.

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.

You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at The Jordaan and Markthal. Get some historical perspective at World Heritage Kinderdijk and Portuguese Synagogue. Step out of Amsterdam with an excursion to Nieuwe Kerk in Delft--about 1h 5 min away.
