Experience wildlife at ARTIS, which supports an aquarium, planetarium, arboretum, and the country's oldest zoo. The zoo was founded in 1838 and holds 27 historic buildings that are wonderful examples of 19th-century architecture. The park's name is short for "natura artis magistra," (nature is the teacher of art and science). Learn about art and science through exhibits with more than 900 species of animals and 200 species of trees. Watch giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and more, along with marine life, at the on-site aquarium. Fantastic zoo. Walking through the grounds is pleasant and sets up a lovely mood for the trip. The variety of animals is good and the zoo doesn't smell like a zoo. The staff are friendly and the pathways are clean and tidy. The play area near the giraffes is excellent. Well worth a visit

Cute zoo with a large variety of animals to see and some really cool play features like the rocky steps and the waterfall bridge. Definitely a must if you have little ones. Really neat playground area for them near the cafe as well. If you go during a weekday expect to see a couple school trips. It’s fairly large though so there’s room to spread out from the main areas.
