Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey
A Benedictine abbey perched on the craggy rock face of Montserrat mountain, Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey serves as one of Catalonia's most important spiritual sites. Alongside the basilica and monastery, the grounds also feature a sanctuary famous for hosting the image of the patron saint of Catalonia, Our Lady of Montserrat. Featuring grand Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the basilica is a work of art in itself, but also houses a museum with paintings and sculptures from the likes of Picasso, El Greco, and Dali. If you're comfortable with heights, make the trip by cable car for superb views of the mountain and surrounding area. Great day trip out of Barcelona. Did this one in November of 2019. It is an amazing example of what mankind can accomplish when we set our minds to it. A mountain retreat, complete with a Basilica. The monks who built this wonder, couldn't have chosen a finer place. Did the walk to the top of the mountain. The views were amazing. Highly recommended.

The most beautiful views and interesting history. We got the package, be aware you'll need about 1.5 hours to travel and back via trains, depending where you are staying in Barcelona. To see the cross, I recommend walking up towards the left side and taking the cable car down to get the best views. Make sure you wear appropriate hiking gear/shoes and bring snacks, as that is limited. This will be a full day trip. Highly recommended if you are visiting Barcelona.
