Explore at least a few of the 2,000 lavishly decorated rooms of the historic Royal Palace of Madrid, considered one of the finest buildings in the city. Take the grand stairway to discover the state rooms, noted for their detailed tapestries, frescoes, porcelain, carvings, china, and silverware. The courtyard connects to both the old pharmacy, which holds hundreds of bottles of centuries-old medicines, and the royal armory, a two-level exhibit of medieval weapons and armor. Although the enormous palace is the official residence of the King, the royal family doesn’t actually live here; the site is generally used for state ceremonies. Avoid visiting on Wednesdays, when entry is free and the lines are extremely long. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Madrid holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Royal Palace of Madrid and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

I have to say I've been to a lot of countries, a few places including Versailles and dozens of museums. Vatican ceilings were cool. I grew up with Viscaya in Miami. This blows them all out of the water. I wish i could take pictures. The armory: incredible. Excellent intact collection. The show armor was exquisite. The king and queen's apartments, the embroidery, the instruments, the woodwork... It's all incredible. Unbelievable. Each king had their own "brand". Check for it on the walls of their personalized rooms.

This is the most beautiful palace I have ever visited and I've been around the block. It far outshines Versailles and the like. I highly recommend a guided tour. I didn't get many photos because they are prohibited in much of the palace - all the more reason to see it for yourself because photos wouldn't do it's splendor any justice anyway.
