Once the beating heart of the city’s cultural life, Plaza Mayor has played host to bullfights, markets, symphonies, tournaments, and even executions. Originally built outside the city walls, the square is now ringed with trendy shops, restaurants, and alfresco cafes, ideal for soaking up the atmosphere and watching the buzzing street life. The enormous square, which at its center features an iconic equestrian statue of King Phillip III, is easily accessible by one of many walkways connected to the surrounding pedestrian streets. At its northern end, the square is enclosed by a two-towered municipal building, housing an informative visitor center where you can pick up maps of the city and arrange for sightseeing tours in and around the historic district. You might say it's a tourist trap. Nice buildings and a statue but there are very much restaurants at this square, which were nog very special. Better visit other places in Madrid!

This is a must see when in Madrid. Even if you have a short layover. Its a quick cab ride for about 30 euro. Fantastic food in area. Sites and museums all within walking distance. Make sure to have comfortable shoes.

Lively public square with many ways to get there and explore central Madrid. There are patios serving different types of food and drinks. There are vendors selling various things and goods. During sunset it is quite beautiful as the lights are coming on and people are hanging out with happiness. A magical and historic area for meeting with friends or just spending time with your loved ones.
