Basilica de San Juan de Dios
Basilica de San Juan de Dios is the spiritual center of the St John of God order, and an ideal example of the Granada Baroque architectural style. Walk around the church to see the towers and facade before entering to view the ornately decorated interior. As you explore, you will see elaborately decorated domes and chapels, with walls covered in artwork, inlaid mirrors, and a wealth of gilded furnishings. Make your way to the sacristy and see a museum-like collection of 62 frames and mirrors, or climb up to the dressing room to a gallery of art pieces. Wander into the post-chapel and see precious objects that have survived the numerous lootings that the church has undergone, then view the gold adornments of the Camarín reliquary. If you prefer a more religious experience, Sunday masses are still held. Was so awed by this basilica . Appreciate being able to come up close to see the art and artefacts . Well worth the admission fee with audio guide . Find the audio guide confusing and was too fast...

An ostentatious sight to see! Lots & lots of gold leaf with layer upon layer of artwork & gold. Did I mention gold? Yeah, there’s some of that. There are even recessed chapels with more gold.

If you want to feel the weight of suffering, adoration, wealth and craftsmanship of the Catholic Church, this is the place. For 1 Euro in the slot you can illuminate the whole place and feel a little like God must have felt at the beginning of creation. As a lapsed Catholic, it brought it all home once more.
