Mustafa Pasha Mosque, Skopje

Overlooking the old bazaar and surrounded by a rose garden, Mustafa Pasha Mosque serves as a significant religious monument from the Ottoman period in Macedonia. An Ottoman vizier, Mustafa Pasha, built the mosque with an open portico in 1492 (look for the inscription above the entrance). Notice the elaborate carvings on the wooden gate. The interior walls of the building are painted with gray floral motifs set against a blue background. A light green carpet and a gilded crystal chandelier hang under the giant dome. The tűrbe plated with white marble holds the grave of the Pasha and the lavishly decorated stone sarcophagus belongs to Umi, one of his daughters.
