Create an itinerary including Sao Vicente Caves
Tour the ancient Sao Vicente Caves, which boast some of Portugal's first caves to be open to the public. These caves were discovered in 1885 but didn't open for public use until 1996. This natural, rugged site was formed by a volcanic eruption about 890,000 years ago. Follow the 1,000 m (3,281 ft) underground route, and emerge from your tour at the Volcano Center. Here you can learn even more about the island, its history, and the caves through carefully crafted audiovisual displays. Using our custom trip planner, Sao Vicente attractions like Sao Vicente Caves can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Interesting, educational place- for kids 10+ and adults. Could be a bit more modern, but I'm not complaining. Pity the caves were closed this season 😔 but overall worth visiting
  • The caves were closed during our last visit (Feb 2023) and will be open in 2024. We were there in 2012 and it was stunning and really amazing experience. What you can do there now is a visit in museum and enjoying the view and a garden around the caves (5EUR for museum). Free parking is available next to the premises.
