Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools
A tropical paradise created by natural phenomena, Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools sit in the nonwestern section of Madeira near the small town of Porto Moniz. These volcanic pools, formed ages ago by lava flow meeting the waters of the Atlantic, attract swimmers from around the world with their natural layout and sweeping views of the ocean. The surrounding rocks reflect in the crystalline pools, creating an impression of an underwater world filled with craggy stone pillars. Try to time your visit for late afternoon or early evening, when the reflections of the setting sun blur the line between sky and water. Our Porto Moniz online trip builder makes visiting Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools and other Porto Moniz attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

A nice place to visit for a swim. Cheap entry. Nice Atlantic views. Water is cool and invigorating. Fun to swim around and explore this rock pool swimming pool hybrid. Lots of places to perch and sun yourself in between swims. A bit crowded on sunny days.

Make sure you take swimming gear... There are 2 sets of pools. One is a more natural formation, is free but has no facilities. The other is more man made, with changing facilities available for EUR1.50. Both are great, I prefer the more natural (and spectacular) ones. Small shoals of fish are present. No need for a wetsuit, the water is warmer than it looks (the rock and sun warms it up). Most of the bottom of the pool is sandy, but be careful on the steps leading in, they can be quite slippy with algae, take your time and enjoy.
