Igreja Matriz de Sao Sebastiao, Ponta Delgada

Very interesting old church, Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, with many elements, such as the ornate main entrance facing Portas da Cidade city landmark, built in the flowery and intricate so-called Manueline style (often observed in Lisbon). The initial construction works on the church began in the first half of the XVIth century. As various other buildings in the Azores, the church combines baroque gilded opulence and stark blackish stone materials quarried locally using basalt lava rocks.
