Perched atop a hill overlooking the picturesque port city, Palheiro Gardens draws visitors from around the world with its vast collection of camellias, which includes several species that are more than two centuries old. The English-style gardens sit about 500 m (1,600 ft) above sea level and benefit from a microclimate ideal for growing a range of native and exotic plants from Africa, Australia, and China. The focal point of this manicured park is an 18th century manor house that was originally built as a hunting lodge. Open throughout the year, the gardens form part of a large estate boasting its own hotel, golf course, and orchid nursery. A huge romantic garden either with endemic species or Asian, Australian, African and American plants as well. Long paths to wander and well planned flower gardens to have a rest on a bench. The tea house has nice variety of cookies and good coffee. The views on Funchal is amazing!!!

Lovely large gardens, with great views across Funchal. Very well maintained and impressive range of plants and trees. There is a tea house with good choice of drinks. Cost to get in was €10 per person. Definitely worth a visit.
