Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert.
