Create an itinerary including Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. • The cathedral was a beautiful building and courtyard (gorgeous stone work). At 2.5 euros, the entrance fee was very reasonable.

  • The old cathedral of Coimbra was built in the 12th century when the capital of Portugal was in this city. In Romanesque style, this cathedral probably replaced an earlier cathedral of which nothing...

  • I’m always skeptical about paying to enter a church, however this was definitely worth the €2.50. Make sure you get the paper guide and follow it. It’s extremely informative and ensures you explore all of the cathedral.
  • Likewise the capital's Se, this is the oldest Cathedral in Coimbra. It's set beneath the University square plateau. However the first appearance was bad due to heavy construction works going on all around it. It's a 12c Romanesque edifice with a fortress like exterior. Interiors, paying a few Euros are interesting to see, but skippable if you saw the Lisbon's as are pretty much the same.
