The Castle of Castro Marim is a medieval castle on a hilltop overlooking the civil parish of Castro Marim, in the municipality of the same name, in the Portuguese Algarve. The castle was part of the defensive line controlled by the Knights Templar, a stronghold used during the Portuguese Reconquista, and adapted during the Restoration War to defend the frontier.A visit to Castelo de Castro Marim represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Castro Marim trip site to plot your vacation.
The castle is located in a unique landscape due to the proximity of salt and mouth of the Guadiana River. Within the castle fortification are two epigraphic inscriptions: one, the first to record a settlement established by a Portuguese monarch, while the second carving identifies the alterations occurring under the reign of King Denis.

Not much there - nice walk round walls of Castle and very cheap to enter but not enough labels or exhibits. Needs a bit of tlc and perhaps re do earphone dialogue. Torture Area good explanations.

This castle is not in good condition but is definitely interesting to visit. The torture chamber we have seen on The Last Kingdom. Clearly this moor Castle was used by the Crusaders to oust the moors.... more

If you are in the area, do check it out. With a small entry fee (1.2 euros?) it's a fun place to visit. Beautiful vistas.
