Housed in a small octagonal chapel in downtown Cebu, Magellan's Cross stands under a ceiling depicting images of the Portuguese adventurer’s arrival to the Philippines and his blood pact with Rajah Humabon. Believed to be the cross planted by the Portuguese and the Spaniards on Magellan’s orders, after the first ever mass conducted in the Philippines by fleet chaplain Pedro Valderrama in 1521, the original cross is encased by a second cross, made from tindalo wood. The chapel sits close to a basilica, and also to the place where an important image of Jesus was reportedly discovered in the mid-16th century. • To go to Magellan‘s cross is free. You don’t need to pay anything but it is crowded. It sits next to a Catholic church that has a mass that usually goes on but there are guards there but it’s very lovely to see the inside of the pavilion with the cross itself knowing you’re stepping in front of history if you’re visiting Cebu, you should definitely visit this place. It also sits next to a couple of market places. The parking is not too far but you will have to pay for it but I think it’s only 30 pesos but as well worth coming to.
  • Good for taking pictures and strolling around. You can also offer prayers here. Area is safe because there are guards in the vicinity.
