Founded by grenadier Carlos Murphy in 1770, the city of Caacupe serves as the capital of the Cordillera department. Each year 300,000 pilgrims come to the city's cathedral to see a carved statuette from the 16th century, said to have survived a great flood and performed miracles. An annual religious festival here honors the Virgin Mary, the area surrounding the cathedral filling with festivities and pilgrims.
