Our Lady of the Rocks stands on the only artificial island in the Adriatic Sea, originally just a rock protruding from the water. Legend says that in 1452, two Venetian sailors found a painting of the Virgin Mary on the rock; from then on, the local seamen swore to build an island around the site and a church dedicated to the Virgin. The small church here dates back to 1632, housing 68 Baroque paintings from the 17th century. Visit a small museum at the site, and view exhibits on the history of Perast, art collections, and items from 3,500 BCE found in a cave nearby.
