The Flaming Cliffs site (also known as Bayanzag (Chinese: 巴彥扎格), Bain-Dzak or Bayn Dzak) (Mongolian: Баянзаг rich in saxaul), with the alternative Mongolian name of Mongolian: Улаан Эрэг (red cliffs), is a region of the Gobi Desert in the Ömnögovi Province of Mongolia, in which important fossil finds have been made. It was given this name by American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews, who visited in the 1920s. The area is most famous for yielding the first discovery of dinosaur eggs. Other finds in the area include specimens of Velociraptor and eutherian mammals. It exposes rocks of the Djadochta Formation. It is illegal to remove fossils from the area without appropriate permits.
The nickname refers to the red or orange color of the sandstone cliffs (especially at a sunset),.

  • This is where dinosaurs left their marks in Mongolia. It has nice views especially on a clear day when the Cliffs seemed to be endless. A pretty good place for a hike. Certain spots are narrow so...

  • This is another breathtaking natural view at central/ southern part of Mongolia. The cliff looks like it is on fire especially during the sunset. Hence, it is given the name as “Flaming Cliffs...

  • Amazing place for photography especially during sunset when the cliffs turn blazing red At night this place is a star gazing spectacular
  • There is just the cliff where dinosaur eggs were first found in 1920s followed by a few excavation expeditions to uncover more dinosaur fossils. Stayed here for the night in this vast desert with an exactly feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. Dramatic cloud make the place look really out of this world. Amazing spot for sunset photography. But wind was extremely strong, so got to hold down that tripod with weights.
