Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu Shrine, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. • One of the most popular shrine in Japan. Uplifting, traditional shrine with it’s unique beauty, spacious walkway and pockets of shady areas. Very convenient with nearby Harajuku station. When we visited this tranquil place, we were lucky to have a chance to see a Japanese traditional wedding taking place. Needless to say, Japan is well known for it’s cleanliness and meticulous traits.
  • What an experience! I visited Japan for a holiday and my visit to Meiji Jingu has got to be my favourite day. It is an absolutely stunning place to visit and would would not even know how close you are to the city around you. When you arrive you walk through these beautiful wooden gates, the detail is out of this world. Whilst walking around we were greeted by a group of students who asked to show us around. They wanted to practice there English and it absolutely made our day! I was a similar age to these students as I was a student myself so we were able to shear so much information. The students all told me loads of information about the shrine that I would not have known otherwise. They taught me how to properly wash my hard respectfully and how to prey at the shrine in the correct manner. This is something I would have never done without them as I would never want to seem disrespectful. This really made the day the best experience ever. During our visit we were also lucky enough to witness a wedding at the shrine. This is a rare occasion and not often seen so it was an extremely lucky day. Once way had walked around the whole shrine it leads you back to the city so you can easily carry on with your day. We parted way with the student and it really was a pleasure to meet them all. I would highly recommend a visit here if you are ever in the area, and done be scared to ask or accept help. Everyone is so friendly and will try to help the best they can.
