Walk to the summit of Knocknarea, a mountain with loose stones believed to contain a Neolithic tomb. Though the cairn of Queen Maeve of Connacht has not been excavated, it is thought to cover a passage tomb. Hike the paved walkway up to the top of this limestone hill for views of County Sligo (expect it to take about 45 minutes to reach the summit). Experience the natural beauty of this 327 m (1,702 ft) mountain, which has been a significant figure in Irish myth and a meeting place for rituals in the Neolithic era. The mountain and cairn were mentioned in many poems by Yeats. Make your Sligo itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • Lovely easy hike, only takes about 20 minutes to get to the top from the car park. Built up a nice appetite and headed off for bite to eat in Sligo town.

  • A strenuous walk. I parked the car in Sligo rugby football club (a honest box is kept). Ver well maintained trail, and the steps were stepper. Plenty of benches along the trail to take rest. The trail leads to Queen Maeve's cairn. An absolutely gorgeous 360° view from the summit. Spent nearly 4 hours. After walk went to Strandhill beach and enjoyed the rest of evening. Perfect for a day trip with family.
  • Beautiful walk, amazing wiev point. Wear good hiking boots.
