Sólheimajökulll embodies the frozen beauty of Iceland with its vivid blue tones and mountainous backdrop. Volcanic rock covers the vast icy terrain that is scattered with peculiar ice and rock formations, ridges, and crevasses. You can attempt walking on the glacier, but a visit with a guide would be recommended as crevasses could be dangerous for inexperienced hikers. Expect strong winds and an uneven rocky trek that may not be suitable for children or the elderly. Using our world travel planner, Vik attractions like Sólheimajökulll can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Visited as part of a tour. Only had time to walk to the viewing platform which was maybe 15min each way, fairly easy walk. You are not meant to go past the view point without a guide for safety...

Most glaciers seem inaccessible - far away on distant mountains. This glacier can be reached via a short walk from the parking lot. There are great views from the overlook or up close of the white...

Beautiful place, especially if you are prepared and well dressed. We did not go on the glacier itself, as we did not book a tour, but it was still a great experience!

While you can walk the glacier on your own it's highly recommend that you do it in a group with a trained guide. You will be provided with all necessary equipment. The glacier is gradually melting: your guide will show you how much the ice receded over the last few years. So hurry up. The part that is close to the lagoon is mostly black: covered in a volcanic ash (it is called Mordor by the guides): you will see the cleaner ice as you climb up.
