Admire one of Iceland's most unique natural sites, Kerið. Formed more than six millennia ago, the volcanic crater is about 55 m (180 ft) deep and 270 m (890 ft) across. Look inside and see the aquamarine lake at the bottom, which derives its striking color from minerals in the soil. Most of the crater's moss-covered slopes are steep, but one is gentle enough to descend to the waterline. Take care when walking down, as there are no steps and the ground can be slippery. The crater is close to the road, and there is plenty of space to park nearby. Plan to visit Kerið and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Selfoss attractions using our Selfoss trip itinerary planning site.

This was a lovely little stop just off the road. We were there on a beautiful, sunny day and it wasn’t nearly as crowded as the waterfalls in the area. My husband and I walked around the rim at the top and around the lake at the bottom. If you have to choose, I would do the rim walk as it gives better views and the colors can look different depending on where the lighting is. You do have to pay to see it, although it is not a lot.

The Keri’s crater is a collapsed volcano. It is quite beautiful and worth the hike down. It has numerous attractive plants flowers and vegetation to see at all levels. Pro-tip west hiking boots the path can be slippery. Try to take photos from all angles.
