Create an itinerary including Grotta Lighthouse
Grotta Lighthouse is a popular recreational area and bird sanctuary, and a good spot for catching the northern lights. It also offers views over parts of the city and the whole bay. Cross a small, sandy bank to get to the lighthouse, but beware of the rising tide. If you come by car, you can wait for the aurora borealis in the little parking lot. On clear nights, the show may go on for hours, but you have to be patient waiting for it to start. The tourist-friendly facilities include restrooms and a bar. • The walk to the grotto proved much more spectacular than the grotto - rocks and beaches, birds and fauna. To see the grotto, you must get the tides right.

  • We went here around 10:30 pm to look for the Northern Lights. We didn't go up to the lighthouse. We had been hunting for about two hours, on our way home from Selfoss and we finally saw a weak view...

  • Great place to go on a evening walk. The lighthouse itself is not accessible to go up, but you can walk around the place. Sunset or sunrise will be an ideal time to visit Wear water resistant shoes if you plan on walking on beach sand. And take a jacket for sure Good venue to do pre-wedding shoots as well.
  • Grótta Island Lighthouse is a lovely place to visit when in Reykjavik. The parking lot was close and only took about a 5-minute walk to the lighthouse. Walking along the beach you’ll find a lot of sea life, shells, and rocks. Sadly you can’t go up the lighthouse but the views are worth it.
