Create an itinerary including Bridge Between Continents
Cross the rift supposedly separating Europe and North America by walking over Bridge Between Continents. A thin, steel deck in the middle of nowhere lies across the point where two tectonic plates are diverging. "Welcome to America" and "Welcome to Europe" signs greet you as you cross. The gorge below the bridge is not very deep or dangerous, so you can easily walk through and pass under the bridge. Notice the engraved padlocks on the fence, which symbolize the love of couples who visited the bridge. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Svartsengi holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Bridge Between Continents and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • While it's a bridge over a fissure that has opened up due to plate tectonics, it is actually not a fissure between the two tectonic plates so you are not actually crossing a bridge between the two...

  • Look it is a cute idea. Someone found a bit of a rift near Reykjavik and plonked a bridge over it to make the point that Iceland is split by the mid Atlantic ridge. Enjoy it for what it is .. a bit...

  • It’s worth your time to go see. There is a metal bridge over the divide. There is black sand on the ground - really think sand. It’s the type of sand you find on the beaches here. There are padlocks on the bridge starting a trend, which is nice but takes away from the beauty of the bridge. Definitely go see if you have time. If you don’t, don’t worry. It’s one you can miss and just look at the photos to not miss out.
  • Wonderful place. Short walk from the car park to the bridge. Worth reading the information boards. As good a place as any to experience how powerful plate tectonics is. If you have time, cross the bridge and walk about 50m to the right - the rift is even deeper than at the bridge itself. Can be exposed in bad weather.
