Witness the unusual landscape of Iceland with its volcanic rock, boiling mud pools, and steam vents at Gunnuhver Hot Springs. The highly active geothermal area was named after the legend of an angry witch named Gunna, whose spirit was trapped in the hot springs by a local pastor 400 years ago. The ghost story and the strong sulfur vapor add to the eerie atmosphere of the place. See the largest mud pool in Iceland, 20 m (65 ft) in diameter, boiling vigorously along its rims. Follow the signs, and stick to the paths. Note that the smell of sulfur can be overwhelming. Amenities include a small rest area and limited toilet facilities. You can see the steam from miles away, so this makes for an interesting stop off on the way to see other sights. It’s probably not interesting enough to drive to on its own, but it’s a great place to.... more

Ok site but not the most impressive- or maybe because we have seen so many hot springs now. Story might attract children.

I feel that this is a hidden gem, we found it by just looking at the map and attractions while we were on the ring road. We hit it at sunset so the light perfectly highlighted the smoke. It was really cool to see the geothermal activity, and you can walk through the smoke (which stinks 🤣) It’s not far from blue lagoon and is on the way round the ring road to the bridge over the continents

Parking is super easy and all paths are easy to walk. Slight sulfuric smell, but that's expected. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it's worth a visit if you're in the area.
