Constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, Alte Mainbruecke serves as one of Wurzburg's iconic landmarks. The 185 m (607 ft) arched causeway spans the river Main in the heart of the old city. In the distance, you'll spy the town's spires on one side and the Marienburg Fortress on the other. The 12 detailed, sandstone statues of saints adorning the length of the bridge were added during the Baroque era. The structure was partially destroyed by retreating German troops in 1945. Its faithful reconstruction used materials from a nearby quarry. Use our Wurzburg day trip site to add Alte Mainbruecke and other attractions to your Wurzburg vacation plans.

  • That was such a nice experience, lots of good wine and laughter 😃 I can really recommend visiting the bridge for a drink and people watching.

  • Lovely walk and lovely views... was probably the part of our visit to Wurzburg that we appreciated the most. Doesn't need any advice on how to enjoy it.

  • Beautiful place. Especially in summer, it is surrounded by bakeries, ice cream shops, restaurants and is well known for its wines. People are usually on the bridge drinking wine and enjoying the scenery. It is always crowded but it is a beautiful place in the city of Würzburg and worth a visit.
  • i recommend to go there as early as possible! if you go there a bit late is pack of so much people. side of the bridge theres a wine restaurant. You can bus some glass of wine and stay at the side of the bridge while drinking. Bridge was beautiful and the view to the Fortress castle you can see through.
