Explore Old Synagogue--thought to be the oldest synagogue building still standing in Europe, built about 1100--which now serves as a museum. Learn about the Jewish communities of Erfurt over the centuries and the history of the synagogue via artifacts and informational displays. A highlight of the collection is the Erfurt treasure, a hoard of coins, goldsmiths' work, and jewelry that belonged to Jews who hid them during the 1349 pogrom. An audio guide is available. Old Synagogue is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

  • There is not much to see inside. Mainly some replicas of old Tora's and texts. Then there is a treasure in the basement. Which is nice and has one outstanding item: a truly exquisite 14th century...

  • The exhibit itself is short but nice, and an interesting audio guide comes with the entrance ticket. However, our experience was not very pleasant due to strange encounters with multiple of the staff....  more

  • Small museum, I took the audio guide in English. Interesting, but not amazing. Well kept, but you can't take pictures. OK.
  • Neat , historical synagogue (that explains that programs weren’t invented by the Notseez) Truly bilingual (EN, DE) with a great multimedial guide. Staff following local friendliness levels :)
