Mt Kazbek, Stepantsminda

Located along the chain of the Caucasus, offers opportunities for serious hiking, either independently or with a guided tour. A dormant volcano, the mountain has a distinctive conical shape, rising 5,034 m (16,516 ft) above sea level, and includes several glaciers, which, if you're climing, make up part of the ascent. Walk though a flower-studded alpine meadow and scramble up glaciers and snowy ledges to arrive at the summit for views over Georgia and Russia. If you wish to climb, come prepared. The ascent and descent take approximately eight days and require mountain climbing equipment rated for glaciers. Several companies run specialized tours.
