On a rocky mountain slope above the Mtkvari River lies Vardzia, a World Heritage Site featuring 13 rows of caves containing churches, wine cellars, and monks' quarters. Initially a small 12th-century fortification, within decades the site developed to include decorated churches, water supplies, and irrigation. Visit this holy city to see its remains after earthquakes, lootings, and wars. Look for a church that features religious paintings and a 150 m (490 ft) tunnel through the mountains that leads to the surface. Some monks still live here and, if you ask, they may take you to places otherwise inaccessible to the public.
