Forming the southern part of the largest island in Comoros, Mount Karthala stands as a huge shield volcano (and one that's prone to frequent eruptions). Its eruptions are characterized by ample of volcanic flow, which have formed a lava lake in the crater of the caldera. One of the latest eruptions occurred in 2015, causing water contamination due to ash fall; the lava also permanently modified the shape of caldera. You can book a glass-bottom boat tour or hike the 2,000 m (6,562 ft) trail and explore the mountain by yourself.
