In the heart of the city, examine a popular landmark with golden bells and spires at Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten). Built in 1972 to honor Bhutan's head of state, the structure resembles a classical Tibetan stupa crowned with a sun and crescent moon. Unlike other stupas, however, this one does not contain enshrined human remains. As you approach the memorial through a small garden, observe the representations of bodhisattvas at the gate, which symbolize power. Explore the interior's elaborately carved annexes, mandalas, statues, and shrines containing pictures of Bhutan's kings. Also, visit the chorten, or large red prayer wheels, which many devotees circumambulate clockwise to receive blessings. Plan my trip to Thimphu with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

The National Memorial Chorten was built in memory of Third Druk Gyalpo and is dedicated to World Peace. The chorten is a large white structure crowned with a golden spire in the back drop of mountain range. It is located close to the center of Thimphu city and is one of its most iconic monuments. Visitors will find elderly Bhutanese people circumambulating the Chorten throughout the day. Chorten literally means ‘Seat of Faith’ and Buddhists often call such monuments, the ‘Mind of Buddha’. The Chorten is an extraordinary example of Buddhist architecture and artwork with its gorgeous paintings and intricate sculptures. Beautiful scenic beauty to catch in camera for unforgatable memory. Entry charge wasINR 100 per head in 2019 Dec.
