Located on the city's northern edge near the Wangchhu River, Tashichho Dzong (Thimpu Dzong) has served as the seat of Bhutan's civil government and the summer capital since the inception of its monarchy. First constructed in 1216, the dzong has experienced constant changes, renovations, and enlargements throughout its history, combining religious and governmental facilities into one. Towers punctuate the fortress-like structure, while the manicured gardens and lawns complement the impressive building. Wear proper clothing during your visit or you may be asked to leave. Tashichho Dzong, the Fortress of Glorious Religion serves as Bhutan's administrative center and seat of government. It is a magnificent piece of massive architecture that houses the Throne Room and the Office of His Majesty the King. It's also where our central monastic body spends the summer. Tashichho Dzong is one of the most prominent landmarks in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, making it a famous site for photography. A number of government offices such as the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Finance are also housed in the Dzong. It is about 2 kilometers from Thimphu town.
