Create an itinerary including Simtokha Dzong
See the birthplace of modern Bhutan at Simtokha Dzong, a three story mini-fortress perched on a ridge overlooking strategic Thimpu Valley. Built in 1629 by a lama who unified Bhutan, the building combines monastic and administrative use. With massive entry doors, high inward-sloping brick and stone walls with a red ochre stripe near the top, this is a typical dzong but also the oldest one which survived in its original form. Admire a large central figure of Sakyamuni flanked by eight bodhisattvas and the Chinese-style flared roof. You can watch the monks here or and observe a panorama with the city in the distance and a statue of golden Buddha. Put Simtokha Dzong on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Thimphu online visit planner.

  • One of the oldest Dzongs in Bhutan and of particular significance because of its association with Shabdrung the man who unified Bhutan. It is small and very personal.

  • One of the best view that one can enjoy outside the city. I have been at this view point most often at night, the view is amazing."
  • Semtokha Dzong is one of the oldest Dzong/fortress in the country. It has some antique wall hanging and beautiful wall paintings. There are many important shrine rooms inside this fortress with a very powerful sacred deities chapple and a antique preserved rooms. You can feel the peace as you enter the central tower. If you get to sit and chant along with the monks, it would have been a special moment.
