Create an itinerary including Ateshgah Fire Temple
Observe traces of ancient fire worship at Ateshgah Fire Temple, which today functions as a museum. The large, walled, castle-like complex dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, although the location exploited Azerbaijan's gas-rich soil as far back as the 7th century CE, when Zoroastrians worshipped natural fire from the natural gas vent on site. The current temple was built by Baku's Hindu community and attrached fire worshippers from India and Persia. A museum documenting Hindu and Zoroastrian communities in Azerbaijan is arranged throughout the temple's restored rooms, where life-size mannequins in traditional clothing illustrate the daily life of the worshippers. • Good to visit to know more about cultural heritage of Azerbaijan. Interesting to know how much of Indian culture has influenced the region.

  • The fire temple is situated outside Baku city (40 min drive) so you'll need a cab or ride to go there. It takes about 1 hour to explore the temple. It is a place of historic and religious relevance. There are small rooms with artefacts and a lot of information in English. If you're really into it, then a tour guide is recommended for a more wholesome experience. There are lots of souvenir shops also, but public toilets were quite dirty so better avoid it if you can. It is a windy place so be sure where you're stepping. Accidents can take place like one of the other families with us, their baby's pram almost toppled with the baby inside but the baby didn't get hurt thankfully because of his safety belt.
  • For a ticket of AZN.4.00 for foreigners, it is not a bad deal as one gets a rare chance to see fire worshippers' worship place with life size model for that era. Also one gets to know history of fire worshipping.
