Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • Such a nice place to be... To stand and to walk... To admire the mirroring of the buildings... Really impressive buildings and design.

  • Best museum of Vienna. Amazing collection. Also nice for kids. Most beautiful cafe. Get a melange and cake. Do the night in the museum tour. It's not as good as it used to be, because those dummies from the city, put lots of bright lights outside that are shining into the museum. There is in general more and more light pollution in the city. They always argue with safety which is honestly BS. Anyway, the tour is still worth it, enjoy.
  • An amazing museum! One of the best I've been to, regarding nature. The museum building was built just like a palace, it has two floors, divided into different exhibition halls. The first floor, near the entrance to the museum, has a display of gems, minerals, and meteorites (the largest collection in the world). Next to it is a display of fossils and dinosaur skeletons. Next is a display of the Ice Age, and then an exhibition of the evolution and human development, tools etc. At the far end of the floor is the new planetarium building - the observatory, where films related to the galaxy and astronomy are projected. On the second floor there is one of the largest exhibition of stuffed animals, birds, insects, terrestrial mammals and aquatic animals. All collected from around the world. Some of the stuffed animals there have become completely extinct. Highly recommended! * Please note that it is prohibited to take pictures inside the museum.
