Khami Ruins, Bulawayo

4.0
A former capital of the Butua State and a major trading center, Khami Ruins features a series of terraces with ornately decorated stone walls. Established around 1450 and abandoned in the mid-17th century, the ruins acquired the World Heritage status in 1986. Wander around the three largest tiered platforms, which were once occupied by the royal family. Notice the checkerboard design on a 68 m (223 ft) long stone block wall. The smaller terraces once housed clay huts of the state officials, while the open areas were reserved for commoners. Visit the small on-site museum to gather some background information. • A great architectural marvel, my ancestors did a great thing. What makes me unhappy is that they had to abbandon their home.
  • This gps position for the ruins entrance is incorrect, rather google “green gables high school” (5GFCRCRC+54). The entrance to the ruins and museum is behind the school. The ruins are amazing to see, the views from the “king’s residence” even more spectacular.
