Hatfield House, Hatfield

#1 of 13 in Things to do in Hatfield
Built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, chief minister to King James I, the Jacobean Hatfield House has been the home of the Cecil family ever since. The site houses numerous iconic objects associated with Queen Elizabeth I, including some gloves and a pair of silk stockings believed to have been the first ones in England. The mansion’s library displays an illuminated parchment 7 m (22 ft) long, displaying the pedigree of Elizabeth I and going back all the way to Adam and Eve. Some of the building’s original Jacobean features are still intact, including the elaborately decorated wooden grand staircase. Join a free guided tour of the mansion’s staterooms to see historic paintings, furniture, tapestries, and armor. • A lovely house to visit, the forest walks are a great touch (and not much travelled, so can be away from the crowd, while still not going too far), the gardens have quite a bit of variety and many hidden places. Getting the ticket once also allows one to return to the grounds & garden (not the house though) as many times in a season as they like.
  • I took my wife who has disability's to Hatfield House recently and was very pleased with the way that all staff looked after us. They were very helpful inside the house and also outside, the buggy ride was especially handy and the driver ( Clive ?) explained the history as we went along.
