Chislehurst Caves, Chislehurst

4.6
#1 of 11 in Nature in Greater London
Use your guide and oil lamp at Chislehurst Caves to explore a network of man-made tunnels 30 m (98 ft) below the surface. The tunnels were originally made to extract chalk and flint, but since the turn of the 20th century they have been used as an arsenal, an air-raid shelter, a dance venue, and even for mushroom cultivation. Take the guided tour to explore the labyrinth, learn the folklore, and get a few surprises along the way. Only groups need to book in advance. The tour is about 1.6 km (1 mi) long and lasts about 50 minutes. The rough terrain is not very accessible, but possible with a strong pusher. • I really enjoyed the tour of the caves. The guide was entertaining and knowledgable - teaching us all about the history. It does warn you to take a jumper and it’s well worth it as it’s pretty chilly once you get into the caves. They had a cafe there which was fairly basic. The staff were helpful and friendly. I’d recommend this as long as you don’t mind cold dark spaces.
  • Dark damp and goes for miles. The tour was brilliant and the guide kept us all entertained throughout with the history of the place, the walk is about an hour going down one corridor then another, we would definitely get lost without the guide. It's very dark, pitch black, but a lantern is provided for some relief . The shop was good and well stocked. The cafe was nice and the prices were cheap. Well worth going, at least once.
