Today, the entire island is a World Biosphere Reserve, with over 500 different kinds of plants, 17 of which are endemic. Lanzarote’s beaches may be why most tourists choose to visit, but the island’s stunning landscapes also include impressive mountain ranges and a vast desert often compared to the surface of the Moon. Little is known about the history of Lanzarote, as most archaeological evidence sits buried under several layers of lava. The volcanic eruptions of the 1730s disrupted a brief period of prosperity and covered a quarter of the island’s surface with lava, destroying 11 villages and its most fertile farmland.
