Well-known for the beautiful views of its famous Promenade des Anglais waterfront, Nice is an ethnically-diverse coastal port city on the French Riviera and the fifth most populated city in France.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Saint-Paul de Vence and Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild. Vieille Ville and Lérins Islands will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Nice with a short trip to La Croisette in Cannes, about 42 minutes away. Spend the 4th (Wed) exploring the fascinating underwater world at Marineland. The 2013 European "Capital of Culture," Marseille is the largest port city on the breezy Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in France.
Get outdoors at Calanques and La Route du Sel. Step off the beaten path and head to Parc National des Calanques and Plage de Piemanson. Change things up with a short trip to La Calanque de Figuerolles in La Ciotat (about 32 minutes away). There's more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde.
