In many ways the most modern of Italian cities, Milan is a busy, elegant metropolis with an impressive list of grand palaces, fine churches, and important museums.
Kick off your visit on the 15th (Sat): shop like a local with Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, then pause for some serene contemplation at Duomo di Milano, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Piazza del Duomo, and finally admire the landmark architecture of Castello Sforzesco. On your second day here, stroll the grounds of Monumental Cemetery, paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Riva Bianca Beach.

Once the most important harbor in the Mediterranean Sea, Genoa has a long history as a rich and powerful trade center in northern Italy.
Go for a jaunt from Genoa to Sestri Levante to see Baia del Silenzio about 52 minutes away. There's still lots to do: get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Aquarium of Genoa, take in the waterfront at Old Port, get to know the fascinating history of Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi a Nervi, and get engrossed in the history at Museo di Palazzo Reale.

Take a train from Milan to Genoa in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. When traveling from Milan in June, plan for a bit cooler days in Genoa, with highs around 29°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 22°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 19th (Wed) early enough to catch the train to Cinque Terre.
