The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
On the 8th (Thu), view the masterpieces at Caravel Art Center and then explore the striking landscape at Valley of the Nuns. Keep things going the next day: see majestic marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour, thentake in the dramatic natural features at Cabo Girao, and then explore the activities along Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools.

Step off the beaten path and head to Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima and Cabo da Roca. Do some cultural sightseeing at Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and Quinta da Regaleira. Venture out of the city with trips to Batalha Monastery (in Batalha) and Park and National Palace of Pena (in Sintra). There's still lots to do: step into the grandiose world of Castelo de S.
