Admire displays of Asian, African, American, and Oceanian art at Museum Rietberg, the only art museum of non-European cultures in the country. Housed in several historical buildings, the museum's core collection comes from a donation from Baron Eduard von der Heydt. Highlights from the Indian collection include the South Indian bronze of Shiva Nataraja, dating back to the Chola dynasty. The site also offers Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain sculpture and bronzes from the 3rd to 16th centuries, as well as paintings on paper, fabric, and palm leaf from the 12th to 19th centuries. The African collection showcases sculptures from the Dogon region in Mali and masks and figures from the Ivory Coast, as well as other areas. The China collection includes Ming dynasty pottery. You can take a public tour upon entry to the museum. Use public transportation to reach the site, as there are no public parking spaces nearby. The museum is huge that's why it makes it kind of confusing walking through. The English descriptions aren't as detailed as the German ones. Also there aren't many historical facts in the... more »

The Museum Rietberg is easy to get to by Zurich Tram. We got off the Green Line here on our way back from seeing Dolder Grand Hotel. Be sure to see the awesome Rodin Gate next to the entrance here. more »

A great art museum focused on non-Western art. There is always some nice exhibitions going on. The Rietberg is not an ethnographic museum, which provides an interesting and different approach for such art than what we are more used to. The museum location and setting itself is very interesting, with buildings spread within a large villa located within the homonym park. The open storage depot is a nice addition to the visitors' experience.

My favorite Museum for the experience of the Ancient ones: Culture and Spirituality from around the world in beautiful surroundings. great place to meditate with the Buddhas or take a contemplative walk in the park :-)There are also many objects from Africa, mainly wooden statues.
