Find out more about Geneva's rich history at Maison Tavel. Built in the 12th century by the wealthy Maison family, the house represents one of the oldest in the city and today contains a free museum. Explore the several floors full of displays, artifacts, and other objects relating to the city's history through the years, such as tapestries, traditional furnishings, and kitchen objects. On the first floor, watch the short film that showcases Geneva's development from ancient into modern times, available in English, French, and German. Visit the attic to view the impressive scale model of the city from the late 1800's, when it still boasted walls and fortifications. Great place! The video history of how lake Genève was formed is brilliant! They provide you with a guide in your language (I think at least 40 to choose from). Must see and FREE.
This was a great little museum. The second floor apartment is actually the least interesting bit, and is detracted from by an unusual curitorial focus on items' make rather their use/function/context. What is much more interesting is artistry of doors and other bits and bobs of stunning craftsmanship displayed on the first floor. The ground floor and third floor together also help to give the visitor a really excellent overview of the city's history and geography. I'd recommend making this part of day 1 of your trip so you can quite literally get the lay of the land. The museum is free, and you should be able to get through it in an hour. The beginning presentation and guided interpretation are available in English, but signs throughout the museum are French.
